Your First Week at the Gym: Here's Exactly What to Wear and Why

Your First Week at the Gym: Here's Exactly What to Wear and Why
May 18, 20263 min read

The first week at the gym comes with enough to figure out. What to wear shouldn't be one of them.

This is a practical breakdown of what works, what doesn't, and why the right gear makes the first week easier than the wrong gear makes it harder. No complicated kit list. Just the pieces that do their job while you figure out yours.

What Gym Clothes Actually Need to Do

In a training session, your body temperature rises, sweat increases, and you're moving through a full range of motion repeatedly. Your clothes need to handle all three without getting in the way.

Fabric that moves heat away from the body. Construction that moves with you. A fit that stays where it's placed through squats, presses, rows, and everything in between.

Everything else colour, style, preference comes after that baseline is met.

The Bottom Half: Get This Right First

Most beginners overthink the top and underthink the bottom. What you wear on your legs affects your range of motion more directly than anything else.

Joggers are the right starting point. The Rawan Drift Joggers are lightweight, tapered without bunching at the knee, and have a waistband that stays set through movement. Not fashion joggers repurposed for the gym built around what training actually requires. In week one, they remove one variable entirely. You won't be thinking about your legs.

Shorts come in once the sessions get more intense or the heat becomes a factor. The Rawan Sprint Shorts are cut for a full range of motion length above the knee, fast-wicking fabric, waistband that holds mid-set. Built for sessions where you're moving constantly and the last thing you need is to feel your clothes.

Cargo Pants work for structured strength days heavier loads, longer rest periods, more deliberate movement. The Rawan Cargo Pants have functional pocket placement that doesn't interfere with movement, a relaxed but tapered fit, and the right fabric weight for the gym without feeling heavy.

The Top Half: Fabric First, Everything Else Second

The training tee is your most used piece. You'll wear it more than anything else you own for the gym. It needs to work every time in heat, under sweat, through movement without being thought about.

The Rawan Air Tee is built around one priority: staying out of your way. Lightweight, breathable fabric that wicks fast and moves heat away from the body. Clean fit without being restrictive. One good training tee worn consistently is more useful than three average ones rotated.

The oversized shirt is more than a style choice. More room through the shoulders and chest means unrestricted movement on pressing and pulling exercises. The silhouette doesn't cling as sweat increases which matters more mid-session than it sounds. The Rawan Oversized Shirt is cut to sit right wide enough to move freely, not so large it becomes its own problem. Breathable fabric without the heaviness of a standard cotton tee. For beginners still figuring out their training style, it works across everything.

What to Avoid in Week One

Regular cotton t-shirts. Cotton absorbs moisture and holds it. Twenty minutes in, it's heavier, clingier, and less comfortable than when you started. Start with fabric that wicks from day one.

Jeans or rigid trousers. No range of motion, no flexibility. Rigid fabric works against every movement pattern you'll encounter.

Overly loose fits. Comfort and excess are different things. Gear that's too large shifts and bunches mid-session. A relaxed but intentional fit stays where it's placed.

The Starter Kit

Starting from scratch, here's the practical list:

  • Two Rawan Air Tees — rotate and wash. Breathability matters from session one.

  • One Rawan Drift Jogger — your default bottom for the first few weeks.

  • One Rawan Oversized Shirt — for lighter sessions or when you want more coverage.

Add later: Sprint Shorts when sessions get harder and heat becomes a real factor. Cargo Pants for structured strength days.

Five pieces. Everything a beginner needs across a full week without gaps.

One Last Thing

The right gear in week one matters because week one is already demanding enough. New movements, new environment, new output your attention is stretched across all of it. Clothes that work remove one layer of that. Clothes that don't add to it.

Week one is a good time to make that decision early.

Rawan is built for the session, from the first one.
